Vantage Updated Thu, 2025 September 18 07:02
  • ASX 200: Down 0.3%, holding near 8,800 at the uptrend line and 50-day EMA.
  • BHP: Fell 1.1% to AU$40; copper expansion plans in Argentina in focus.
  • Brambles: Down 0.6%, still up 31% over the year; testing 50-day EMA.
  • QBE: Dropped 0.6%, down 5% in a month but up 23% year-on-year.

The ASX 200 slipped by about 0.3% on Wednesday, testing both the long-standing uptrend line and the 50-day EMA. The index now hovers near the 8,800 level, a psychologically significant round number that has historically seen heavy trading activity.

Global markets are holding their breath ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, press conference, and statement. As the issuer of the world’s reserve currency, the Fed’s policies strongly shape global trade and financial flows.

Australia is not immune to these effects, particularly through the commodity sector, which often reacts sharply to shifts in global demand. Growth in Asia, which is closely tied to the US and European economies, will also play a major role.

The ASX 200 may be at an inflection point, with the next few sessions likely to set the tone for its direction—either upward or downward.

Chart 1: ASX daily price chart

BHP Group Limited (BHP)

BHP Group Limited fell 1.13% on Wednesday, bringing the share price down to AU$40. This level often attracts attention from options traders, adding to the interest around the stock.

At the same time, several broader factors are likely to shape BHP’s performance in the near term. Notably, the company has invested $400 million in a venture in Argentina to support the expansion of its copper business. BHP now sits at a key decision point, and the next move could prove significant.

Chart 2: BHP Group Limited daily price chart

Brambles Limited (BXB)

Brambles Limited slipped 0.64% on Wednesday, trimming part of its 7.19% gain over the past month. Over the last year, the company’s share price has risen 30.98%, highlighting its strong performance.

The stock is now testing the 50-day EMA, with signs of a measured reaction. The pullback has been steady following a sharp post-earnings rally. Brambles has shown a sustained bullish trend, and the recent dip may draw renewed interest from value-focused investors.

Chart 3: Brambles Limited daily price chart

QBE Insurance Group Limited (QBE)

QBE Insurance Group slipped 0.58% during the session, reflecting continued softness in the stock. Over the past month, the share price has fallen by just over 5%, though it remains up 22.61% over the last year.

The stock currently trades well below the 50-day and 200-day EMAs, signalling ongoing pressure. How it reacts in the coming sessions may provide clues on whether a turnaround is possible. Some investors view insurance stocks like QBE as potential defensive options during periods of broader market uncertainty, such as reactions to the FOMC decision.
