ASX 200 Pushes Past Key Level as Momentum Builds
- The ASX 200 broke above the AU$8,800 level on Wednesday, extending its steady upward trend.
- Commodity prices and global risk sentiment continue to play a major role in influencing the index.
- The index remains a regional leader, outperforming several major markets across Asia.
The ASX 200 saw moderate gains on Wednesday, breaking above the key AU$8,800 level. This index has shown a generally bullish trend for some time now. There is potential for it to reach the AU$8,900 mark, though this may require some effort.
Current momentum suggests the market is trying to keep pace with global indices. Australia’s strong link to commodities also remains an important factor, as movements in resource prices continue to influence the direction of the ASX 200.

BHP Group Limited (BHP)
BHP Group Limited rose by 0.25% on Wednesday, closing just below the AU$40 mark. While the stock is down 3.3% over the past year, it has seen a modest recovery of 3.02% over the past month. Currently, the price is hovering around the 200-day EMA, attracting attention from technical traders.
This level could act as an area of support or resistance in the near term. Looking ahead, BHP’s earnings report on Tuesday, 19 August is expected to be the next key catalyst. Market forecasts point to earnings of AU$1.561 per share and revenue of AU$39.75 billion.
After a recent breakout, the current pullback toward the moving averages may be of interest to some market participants.

ANZ Group Holdings (ANZ)
ANZ closed 0.13% higher on Wednesday, finishing the session above the AU$30 level. Over the past month, the stock has gained 1.81%, and it is up 13.08% over the past year. The AU$31 level remains a key resistance point, with recent price action struggling to break above it.
Despite this, the overall trend has been gradually upward. With no immediate earnings report on the horizon, recent market behaviour suggests value-focused traders are stepping in on dips. This pattern has been consistent over the past several weeks.

Aristocrat Leisure (ALL)
Aristocrat Leisure rose by 1.88% on Wednesday, as the consumer discretionary stock continues to show strong momentum. Over the past year, the company has gained 37.8%, reflecting a firmly bullish trend.
It has been one of the top performers on the ASX 200 for some time. With the price now testing the AU$70 level, any sustained move higher could trigger a breakout from a large ascending triangle formation.
There are no earnings reports expected in the near term, so current movement is likely being driven by sentiment and broader market momentum.
