ASX 200 Opens Higher Amid Trade Optimism, Then Retreats
- ASX200: Opened higher on trade optimism but later reversed gains, holding near the AU$9,000 level.
- BHP: Gained 0.69%, extending its uptrend as expectations for stronger Chinese demand supported commodity prices.
- RIO: Rose 1.27%, closing at session highs with firm inflows and steady momentum above the AU$133 level.
- NST: Added 1.56%, rebounding from the AU$23 level as gold strength continued to support sentiment.
The Australian index opened the session on a positive note, as optimism returned to the market following reports that the United States and China may be close to reaching a trade agreement. If confirmed, such a development could position Australia as a significant beneficiary. This is because Australia maintains strong trade relations with China and close economic ties with the United States.
Australia would stand to gain the most if China remains the world’s leading manufacturing hub — and there are currently no indications that this will change. Should trade relations between China and the United States improve, demand for hard commodities such as copper and iron is likely to grow. These resources are key exports for Australia and could support continued gains in its stock index over the long term.
However, it is worth noting that the early gains were quickly reversed. The market is now hovering around the AU$9,000 level, a round and psychologically important figure that may attract the attention of technical traders.

BHP Group Limited (BHP)
BHP Group Limited rose 0.69%, which aligns with expectations given its exposure to global trade. The company stands to benefit if China continues to demand hard commodities such as copper and iron, where BHP remains a key global supplier.
The chart continues to show a positive outlook, with BHP maintaining an uptrend since 19 September. Over the past three months, the stock has gained 3.13%, bringing its 12-month performance to a positive 2.71%.

RIO Tinto Limited (RIO)
Rio Tinto rose 1.27% during Monday’s trading session, as the materials giant continued to attract inflows. The company is now approaching a market capitalisation of AU$50 billion. Rio also showed notable strength, trading above AU$133 and closing at the session’s high.
The stock has gained 8.35% over the past month and 13.05% over the past year. Trading volume remains healthy, suggesting continued investor interest as attention stays on the global economic outlook.
The market has been rallying since 19 September, and with no upcoming earnings reports, momentum is likely to remain a key driver. Broader sentiment around global trade, particularly between the United States and China, will also play a crucial role in shaping Rio’s near-term performance.

Northern Star Resources Limited (NST)
Northern Star Resources rose 1.56% during the trading session, continuing to attract strong inflows. The stock has gained 5.85% over the past month and remains one of the stronger performers in the materials sector.
Over the past year, NST has advanced 31.6%, showing consistent momentum. The price recently rebounded from the AU$23 level, coinciding with support at the 50-day EMA.
Overall, NST remains a key beneficiary of the recent strength in gold prices. However, while sentiment stays bullish, the stock could face challenges if gold begins to weaken.
