Vantage Updated Tue, 2025 December 9 06:31
  • ASX 200: The ASX 200 is holding near AU$8,600 as it consolidates ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy update.
  • BHP Group: BHP is up 4.27% over the month and 9.26% over the year, supported by steady inflows into materials.
  • Westpac Banking: Westpac is down 1.9% for the month but up 16.73% over the year, with price action consolidating near AU$37.
  • Macquarie Group: Macquarie is down 3.94% over the month and nearly 15% over the year, though early stabilisation signs are emerging.

The ASX 200 has been drifting sideways over the past 2 weeks as it sits on top of the 200-day EMA. Many market participants closely watch this indicator because it often reflects the broader trend. With the index hovering near AU$8,600, conditions suggest a holding pattern ahead of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision and press conference on Wednesday.

Markets widely expect a rate cut, but it is the tone of the press conference that traders are watching. The outlook for future rate cuts will guide sentiment, as expectations around policy direction influence risk appetite.

Although the announcement is not Australian, it tends to shape risk appetite globally. Traders are assessing whether liquidity conditions could improve, as rising liquidity often encourages greater interest in risk assets. This, in turn, may draw additional attention to Australian sectors such as materials and finance.

Chart 1: ASX 200 daily price chart

BHP Group Limited (BHP)

BHP Group Limited eased by 0.83% during Monday’s session, though it is worth noting that the share price is testing a major breakout around the AU$45 level. The recent dip appears to be a natural pause after a sharp upward move. Markets often see this type of pullback following strong momentum.

Over the past month, BHP Group Limited has risen 4.27%, and over the past year it has gained 9.26%. Materials companies continue to attract inflows as commodity markets remain active. This broader theme has helped support BHP’s performance despite short-term fluctuations.

Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC)

Westpac Banking rose 0.39% during Monday’s session, though it remains down 1.9% for the month. Over the past year, WBC has gained 16.73% and continues to show considerable strength. The 50-day EMA sits just above current levels, and the market has recently pulled back from it.

This suggests the price may still be moving through a consolidation phase. A notable double-bottom pattern has also formed around the AU$37 level. This indicates that the market may have attempted to establish a significant floor in recent weeks.

Chart 3: Westpac Banking daily price chart

Macquarie Group Limited (MQG)

Macquarie Group Limited gained 0.47% during Monday’s session, offering a modest attempt to recover from recent declines. Over the past month, the stock has fallen 3.94%, and over the past year it is down nearly 15%. The market appears to be searching for stability, with a slight increase in trading volume.

There are still several headwinds influencing sentiment, yet early signs of consolidation are beginning to emerge. This could mark the initial stages of a potential stabilisation phase. If the market holds steady, it may eventually draw interest from value-focused investors, particularly given the AU$2.80 dividend.
