ASX 200 Edges Lower Ahead of RBA Rate Decision
- Global markets remain cautious amid light trade and mixed sentiment.
- Investors await the Reserve Bank of Australia’s policy announcement later today.
- Ongoing trade tensions keep tariffs in focus for Australian exporters.
Equity markets showed mild weakness during Monday’s session, and Australia was no exception. The ASX 200 remains just below its all-time high of approximately AU$8,625, a key technical level closely watched by traders.
This recent pullback is likely to attract dip buyers, considering the market’s historical tendency to bounce from similar moves. The overall bullish trend remains intact, making temporary declines appear more like opportunities than warning signs.
It’s not unusual for markets to hesitate near record highs, and that seems to be the case here. Over the past few weeks, the AU$8,500 level has acted as a consistent support zone.
Looking ahead, all eyes are on the Reserve Bank of Australia’s interest rate decision, due early Tuesday. This announcement could influence risk sentiment across the ASX 200 and the Australian dollar, with potential ripple effects on export-focused companies.

BHP Group Limited (BHP)
BHP Group Limited slipped 0.34% during Monday’s session, reflecting continued uncertainty in the broader market. Although BHP has gained 0.97% over the past month, it remains down 13.04% over the past year, highlighting the longer-term bearish pressure.
At present, the stock is attempting to reach the 200-day EMA, a level that often draws significant attention from technical traders. A break above the AU$40 mark—especially with strong volume—could signal a major shift in sentiment.
With earnings and dividend announcements currently out of the way, BHP’s price is largely being driven by commodity markets. Given the recent volatility in those markets, price action may remain choppy in the short term.

Goodman Group (GMG)
Goodman Group declined 0.46% during Monday’s session, as the real estate giant continues to experience choppy trading conditions. While GMG has posted a 3.93% gain over the past month, it remains down 1.52% over the past year.
In recent sessions, the company distributed its AU$0.15 dividend and is now searching for its next major catalyst. From a technical perspective, the 50-day EMA has crossed above the 200-day EMA, forming a “golden cross”—a bullish signal watched closely by traders.
Despite this, market action remains uneven and lacks clear direction. As such, short-term movements may continue to be influenced by broader sentiment and sector trends.

Brambles Limited (BXB)
Brambles Limited fell 1.11% during Monday’s session, starting the week on a softer note. Despite the decline, the industrial giant remains up 0.44% for the month and an impressive 64.02% over the past year.
Such pullbacks are not unusual for a stock that has rallied strongly, as some profit-taking is to be expected. Brambles has generally been seen as a “buy the dip” candidate throughout the year, with the rising 50-day EMA acting as dynamic support.
A recent surge in trading volume suggests renewed interest from market participants. Overall, it remains one of the more resilient uptrends within the ASX 200 over the past several months.
