Tesla Q2 2026 Earnings Preview: Can the Delivery Rebound Put Profitability Back in the Driver’s Seat?

Tesla will report its second-quarter results after the US market closes on Wednesday, July 22. The company enters earnings with vehicle volumes recovering sharply, while its share price and underlying market confidence continue moving in the opposite direction. The real test this quarter is whether stronger volumes and management’s outlook can rebuild margins, cash flow and investor confidence as Tesla’s AI spending continues to climb.

Tesla Q1 Earnings Review

Tesla’s first quarter showed a meaningful improvement from a weak comparative period. Revenue rose 16% year-on-year to $22.4 billion, while gross margin expanded to 21.1% and operating income more than doubled to $941 million. However, the operating margin slipped sequentially to 4.2%, leaving a clear gap between the improvement in headline profitability and the strength investors would normally expect from a company carrying Tesla’s valuation. Free cash flow reached $1.4 billion, but capital expenditure also climbed 67% to almost $2.5 billion as investment accelerated across AI compute, batteries, Robotaxi, Cybercab and Optimus.

The operational picture was also mixed. Tesla delivered 358,023 vehicles during the quarter, compared with production of 408,386, pushing global inventory to 27 days of supply. Active FSD subscriptions rose 51% year-on-year to 1.28 million, showing that software adoption continued to gather pace even as the vehicle business carried elevated inventory.

Tesla Q2 Earnings Expectations

The second quarter delivered a much stronger volume signal. Tesla produced 451,758 vehicles and delivered 480,126, representing sequential increases of around 11% and 34%, respectively. Model 3 and Model Y deliveries surged to 467,762, while energy-storage deployments reached 13.5 GWh.

Deliveries also exceeded production by more than 28,000 vehicles, suggesting Tesla made meaningful progress in clearing inventory accumulated during the previous quarter.

Company-compiled analyst consensus points to second-quarter revenue of approximately $27.6 billion, including around $20 billion from automotive operations, $3.8 billion from energy generation and storage and $3.8 billion from services and other businesses. Earnings are expected to reach roughly $0.52 per share.

That stronger volume performance sets a much better starting point for the quarter, but the quality of the rebound will matter more than the headline itself. Investors will be watching whether Tesla preserved enough pricing power to rebuild automotive margins, because higher deliveries will mean far less if discounts, promotional financing and a weaker product mix absorbed most of the benefit. Free cash flow will provide the next read as spending on Robotaxi, Cybercab, Optimus and AI infrastructure continues to climb.

The same pressure applies to Tesla’s longer-term AI story. Investors will want firmer milestones rather than another long-range promise. Tesla says paid Robotaxi miles nearly doubled sequentially in the first quarter, while unsupervised operations expanded in Texas and preparations continued across several additional US markets.

Tesla Share Price

Tesla shares are trading below $370 ahead of earnings and have fallen below their short-, medium- and long-term simple moving averages, leaving the technical picture firmly bear-biased. The stock has also broken beneath support near $385 and remains trapped below a descending trend line from its recent highs. Initial support sits around $356, followed by $343–$337. Resistance has now formed near $385, with a stronger barrier around $402. A decisive recovery above that zone would be needed before the recent downturn begins to lose control. Until then, earnings will need to deliver a hard push to reverse both weakening momentum and the stock’s sequence of lower highs.

Summary

Tesla has already answered the first question with a sharp recovery in production and vehicle volumes during the second quarter. The harder test now is whether that rebound can flow through to margins and cash generation while the company continues funding an increasingly ambitious AI future. Without that confirmation, stronger deliveries may provide only a temporary floor rather than the engine for a durable share-price recovery.
