Alphabet Q2 2026 Earnings Preview: Can Cloud Growth Outrun the AI Spending Bill?

Alphabet will report its second-quarter results after the US market closes on Wednesday, July 22. The company enters earnings with its core businesses running at full speed, while scepticism over its rapidly rising AI spending is growing louder. This quarter is therefore less about proving that Alphabet has AI momentum and more about showing that the returns are arriving quickly enough to justify one of the largest investment programs in the company’s history.

Alphabet Q1 Earnings Review

Alphabet delivered a powerful first quarter. Revenue rose 22% year-on-year to $109.9 billion, while operating income increased 30% to $39.7 billion and the operating margin expanded to 36.1%. Net income jumped 81% to $62.6 billion, although the headline figure was heavily boosted by unrealised investment gains, making operating income a cleaner measure of core business performance.

Google Cloud was the standout. Revenue surged 63% to $20 billion, while operating income more than tripled to $6.6 billion and the segment margin expanded to 32.9%.

Search revenue also climbed 19%, suggesting that AI-generated answers are currently defending Google’s moat and strengthening monetization, rather than immediately cannibalizing its core advertising engine.

However, the strong result arrived with a much larger bill. Operating expenses rose 24%, led by heavier research and development spending, while Alphabet lifted its 2026 capital-expenditure guidance to between $180 billion and $190 billion. Management has also warned that spending could rise significantly again in 2027 as it builds the data centres, servers and energy infrastructure required to meet rapidly expanding AI demand.

Alphabet Q2 Earnings Expectations

For the second quarter, consensus expectations point to revenue of around $117 billion, up roughly 20% year-on-year, and earnings of approximately $2.87 per share. Google Cloud revenue is expected to reach about $22.5 billion, representing growth of around 65%.

The first key watch point is whether Google Cloud can maintain its blistering growth pace without sacrificing operating margins.

The second is Search, where investors will want evidence that AI Overviews and Gemini are creating fresh commercial opportunities rather than simply raising the cost of serving each query.

Capex and free cash flow will complete the picture. Alphabet does not need to take its foot off the AI spending pedal, but it must prove that revenue growth and operating leverage can keep outrunning the rising investment bill. A strong headline beat may therefore carry less weight than the quality of that growth and management’s ability to draw a clearer line between today’s record spending and tomorrow’s returns.

Alphabet Share Price

Alphabet shares are trading near $350, around 13% below their May peak, while options markets imply a post-earnings move of approximately 6% in either direction. The daily chart remains trapped within a descending channel, suggesting the stock is still searching for a convincing floor after its recent pullback.

Immediate resistance sits near $355, where the upper channel boundary meets a previous breakout area. A decisive move above that level could clear the way for buyers to target the next major psychological resistance near $375. Initial support sits around $335, followed by the stronger $318–$320 zone. Momentum is attempting to turn higher, but the recovery remains fragile until the stock breaks its sequence of lower highs.

Summary

Alphabet’s challenge is clear. The company has already proven it can capitalise on explosive AI demand, but it is also spending at an extraordinary scale. This quarter will be closely watched for signs that Cloud, Search, and Gemini can begin converting that investment into a more visible, durable earnings runway.
